Né le 29 août 1936, il est issu d'une grande famille de militaires. Son père, Jack McCain est amiral en chef, et son grand père, John S. McCain, amiral dans le Pacifique. Lors de ses premières années de vie, John McCain est donc balloté d'une affectation militaire à une autre. Il nait d'ailleurs sur une base militaire au Panama.
Tout logiquement, il se dirige vers une scolarité en Académie militaire et plus précisément à l'Académie Navale d'Annapolis de 1954 à 1958. Il est toutefois loin d'être un élève exemplaire. Sa vie bascule avec la guerre du Vietnam. Le 26 octobre 1967, quelques mois après avoir échappé à la mort lors d'un tir de roquette accidentel, son avion est abattu. John McCain peut s'éjecter de celui-ci mais ses deux bras et une jambe sont cassés. Il sera fait prisonnier pendant 5 ans à Hanoï. Il y construira sa légende en refusant notamment d'être libéré sans ses compatriotes, ou encore en étant mis en isolation pendant plus de deux ans.
A son retour, en 1973, il est décoré par le président de l'époque lui même, Richard Nixon. Il poursuivra toutefois sa carrière militaire. En 1977, il associe politique et armée en devenant agent de liaison de la Navy auprès du Sénat. En 1981, à la mort de son père, il démissionne de l'armée avec un nombre incalculable de récompenses, dont la Silver Star ou la Purple Heart. Une nouvelle carrière peut débuter.
John McCain se lance donc dans la politique. En 1982, il se présente en tant que député de l'Arizona. Puis, En 1987, il est élu sénateur et sera réélu 3 fois, en 1992, 1998 et 2004.
En 2000, il brigue l'investiture du parti républicain contre un certain ... George W. Bush. Il échouera avec le succès que l'on connaît pour son concurrent.
Le 28 février 2007, il annonce officiellement vouloir briguer à nouveau l'investiture du Parti Républicain. En février 2008, il sort gagnant du Super Thuesday. En remportant plusieurs primaires début mars 2008, il gagne officiellement l'investiture du Pari Républicain. Il perd finalement contre le démocrate Barack Obama, qui devient le 44ème président des Etats-Unis.
Ce républicain, est pour la peine de mort mais contre la torture.
Il est divorcé de sa première femme et remarié avec Cindy Lou Hensley et est le père de 7 enfants.

By taking away some primary in the beginning of March, 2008, he gains officially the nomination of the Republican Bet. He loses finally against the democrat Barack Obama, who becomes the 44th President of the United states of America.
This republican, is for the capital punishment but against the torture. He is divorced of his first wife and remarried with Cindy Lou Hensley and is the father of 7 children.
